Results for Metro Series heat 7

The Claremont Yacht Club hosted heat seven of our Farr 9.2 Metro Series on the 15th of March, as part of their Commodore’s Cup regatta. The course, established in 1905, had the fleet sailing two laps around Freshwater Bay, with shifty winds around the southern marks.

Lionheart made great use of those shifts, as well as some crafy spinnaker work to take first and fastest. This ends the six-heat trend of a separate winner in each race! Evidently, some of the boats had a better day out than others, with a couple of curious spinnaker arrangements spotted on the course, and a small amount of makeshift sail repair happening too.

Results from heat seven are:

After this heat, the series results are still very close, with only two points between first, second and third on championship results, and second places at equal points for both championship and consistency:

For sale: Farr 9.2 mould set

The Farr 9.2 Association is looking for a new home for our set of fibreglass moulds for constructing a Farr 9.2 yacht, as used for the vibrant fleet here in Perth.

The design is based on Bruce Farr design #87 – 9.2m LOA, 2.8m beam, 1.6m draft (with standard keel). A racing-cruiser style, the boat is very suitable for both racing on the river and ocean passages, with a stable but efficient hull shape.

A typical construction includes berths for five (one double v-berth, two settee berths, one quarter berth), plus toilet, galley and navigation station. Spacious cockpit with comfortable helming and trimming positions, four winches, storage lockers, and sugar-scoop style transom. Engine bay suitable for a saildrive-type engine – current boats are equipped with 9-16hp diesels or a direct-drive electric engine.

Included are the moulds for the hull, deck and interior cabin layout. Moulds for the smaller components (hatch cover, cockpit lockers and rudder) are kept by the Farr 9.2 Association, and would be available for loan to a constructor, at no cost. A layup schedule can be provided also, to guide a build process.

The moulds can be used in two configurations, through the use of a removable insert. The insert brings the companionway forward, giving a larger cockpit and smaller cabin than the original class-compliant configuration.

The Farr 9.2 fleet in Perth consists of 14 boats, almost all sailing in frequent races on the Swan River. The Farr 9.2 Association coordinates two series of races during the year, plus a number of social and cruising events. The association would welcome any newcomers, and our membership has extensive experience with the design to field any questions for a new build.

Please contact Jeremy Kerr <jk@ozlabs.org> for any questions, or to view either some of the existing boats or the moulds themselves.

The purchaser will need to arrange transport. The moulds are located in O’Connor, with facilities to load on to a flat-bed truck. The moulds are currently stacked, and can be transported as a single unit. We can provide a recommendation for a transport provider if necessary. Space required for the stacked moulds is approx 9.5m (l) × 3m (w) × 3.5m (h).

Price for the set of moulds is $150 negotiable. We’re looking for a quick sale, feel free to get in touch if you have any queries.

Farr 9.2 report – January 2020

This is the first of our Farr 9.2 reports for the website – originally published in the RPYC magazine, we’re now including them here too.

With the 2019/2020 racing season now well underway, we’re also at the half-way point of the Farr 9.2 metro series, with four of eight races completed. As it stands now, the series results are far from certain, with different a championship winner in each race. After heat one, Lionheart (Warren Westaway) finished first and fastest, so leading both championship and consistency results for the series.

Elusive and Lionheart running downwind, with Elusive in front but slightly to leeward.

From there, heat two took the fleet to South of Perth Yacht Club to join their Saturday races. The regular summer sea breeze was absent, replaced by a shifting northerly, the start team adjusting the line to suit the conditions. With their home-club advantage on the course, SoPYC boat Igawa (David Atkinson) found the favourable winds and crossed the finish line first, with Elusive (Richard Brisbane-Cohen) very close behind. Handicap results had The Black Smoke (Jeremy Kerr) at first, Lionheart second, and Igawa third.

Itinerant sailing downwind from Attadale

After heat two, the championship series lead was in the hands of Itinerant (Mark Hansen), sailing consistently well over the two races so far.

Heat three also had the fleet sailing out of SoPYC, with the rest of the teams now a little more accustomed to the courses, and familiar south-westerly winds returning. After establishing a lead in the first downwind run, Farrlap (Andrew Hossen) found their pace and pulled away from the fleet to finish first by almost two minutes in front of chasing boat Elusive. Handicap results had The Black Smoke first, Farrlap adding a second flag to their collection for the day, and Elusive third. Lindsay Preece from Ironbark Photos caught some great shots of the race, a few of which we’ve included here.

With their line honours result in heat three, Farrlap now takes the championship series lead, but only by a single point ahead of Itinerant, and Elusive only a further point behind.

Farrlap running downwind under spinnaker

Heat four returns the fleet to RPYC, on a hot Saturday, with a south westerly establishing before the start to bring some relief from the heat. The Black Smoke built a small lead early in the race, carrying it over the finish line, only a handful of seconds in front of pursuing Farrlap. Despite breaking the start and going back around, Elusive recovered brilliantly to finish fourth, one second behind Itinerant. Handicap results had The Black Smoke first, Frenzy (Murray Rowe) second, and Farrlap third.

The over-the-line results from heat four meant that Farrlap consolidates their lead – but only by one additional point – over Itinerant, and Elusive close in third by another two points. At this stage, the series is still very much in contention! We’re all getting set for a competitive heat five, to be held early in the new year.

The Black Smoke sailing south from Fremantle to Cockburn Sound

As a bit of a holiday from the Swan River racing, a couple of the 9.2s had migrated south for the Christmas/New Year’s break, participating in the Cockburn Sound Regatta, hosted by The Cruising Yacht Club. Igawa had their full wardrobe of sails out to compete in division two, taking fifth place in a very diverse fleet. The Black Smoke took it a little easier by keeping it to jib and main only, taking third place in JAM fleet 3.

The Farr 9.2 fleet are always keen to welcome newcomers – both for serious sailing and not-so-serious social events. If you’d like to join one of our boats, a few teams are looking for new crew – either for occasional fill-in spots or regular race commitments. Email the Association on secretary@farr92.asn.au to get in touch.

Results for Metro Series heat 6

On the 8th of February, the fleet returned to Royal Perth Yacht Club for heat six of the Metro Series, held as the Max Hayes Memorial trophy.

Despite the forecast predictions for a consistent south-westerly, the winds during the race were quite variable, with small irregular shifts keeping the fleet on their toes. Apparently the 9.2s were a little too keen to get going, with the start boat issuing a general recall. The re-start went smoothly though, Elusive and Farrlap making an early break and staying out in front of the fleet for the remainder of the race.

After six heats, we’ve had six different championship winners this series!

The progress results are very close, with Elusive taking the Championship lead on countback from Farrlap, followed by Itinerant only 1 point behind.

Results for Metro Series heat 5

The fleet started the new year with Metro Heat 5 on the 18th of January, hosted by Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club.

A lull in the wind just before the start had some skippers and crews rethinking their sail choices, however the sea breeze promptly roared in, giving us ideal conditions to head off racing.

Itinerant stormed out to an immediate lead, which she kept throughout the race, coming home first and fastest. Lionheart followed closely all afternoon but was unable to catch them, coming in second, with Elusive placing third.

Thanks to RFBYC for hosting us.

Results for Metro Series heat 4

The final Metro Series heat of 2019 was held on the 14th of December back at Royal Perth Yacht Club.

Yet again, the forecast conditions did not eventuate, with a strengthening South-Westerly sea breeze providing some relief from the heat.

Rounding the top mark just ahead of Itinerant, The Black Smoke kept her lead throughout the race, kept honest by Farrlap chasing close behind right up to the finish line.

The Black Smoke was first and fastest, with Frenzy second and Farrlap third. In an excellent recovery from being OCS, Elusive finished 1 second off third place – well done.

For those following, that makes 4 different line honours winners from the 4 races of this season!

Results for metro series heat 3

On the 23 November, the fleet was back at South of Perth Yacht Club for Heat 3 of the Metro Series.

In a welcome change from the previous metro race, our usual summer sailing conditions had returned, and the fleet battled in a consistent South-West breeze all afternoon.

Farrlap showed us all the way, taking out second and fastest, with The Black Smoke coming first and Elusive third on handicap.

The conditions resulted in a few equipment breakages and some crew bumps and scrapes, so well done to everyone – a great race!

Thanks to SoPYC for hosting us again.

Heat 2 of the Metro series was held at South of Perth Yacht Club on the 9th of November.

The warm conditions and a mid race wind change from North-East to a stronger North-West kept all crews on their toes.

Congratulations to Igawa on taking line honours and The Black Smoke for first on handicap.

Thanks to SoPYC for hosting, and we’ll see you all again this Saturday.

Results for metro series heat 1

The first heat of the new 2019/2020 Farr 9.2 metro series took place on the 12th of October, as part of the Opening Day celebrations at Royal Perth Yacht Club. Some competitors were a little too eager for the season to get going, with a tightly contested start line and lots of close crossings throughout the fleet.

Well done to Lionheart, taking first and fastest and thanks as always to RPYC for hosting us.
